ARTIST STATEMENT:
Life is made up of little pieces.
Scientists figured that one out when they discovered the atom. I figured it out when I discovered the collage.
We all know that along with pieces comes the mess. For some lucky people, their pieces fall out of their brains in a nice, orderly way. My mind usually feels like a jigsaw puzzle that been through the tumble dryer.
I began this project in the spring of 2016 with a detailed plan in mind, but as my jigsaw-puzzle-piece brain would have it, the project began taking a different, more organic course. The collages in this series were made digitally from photos I took on my phone between January and May 2016, which was an especially messy and difficult time. They are intended to piece together various experiences during that time, and while they are not meant to be interpreted literally, they can be read as chapters.
These are my pieces of real, messy life.
